Welcome

To the Whole Art Theatre! The balance of clever camp and edgy drama has long been Whole Art's raison d'etre. We are a theatre company committed to quality, and we celebrate diversity through readings, discussions, and dramatic productions; enabling actors and audiences to recognize and explore their deeper and truer natures. Our mission is to bring socially significant issues to the forefront --issues of gay and lesbian rights particularly, social justice, human rights, and women's rights.

Join us this season to celebrate the art, the Whole Art, and nothing but the art.

OUR MISSION

The Whole Art is an independent, non-profit theatre in southwestern Michigan committed to developing new artists, new voices and cutting-edge performing arts. We are a cultural forum that specializes in the daring, the innovative, and the experimental.
The Whole Art is dedicated to an open and affirming promotion of diversity, tolerance, free creative expression in all its programs, and the education and cultivation of artists and audiences.

History

The Whole Art Theatre Company was founded in 1976 by German immigrant Werner Krigelstein, who wanted to offer theatre to rural communities. Since its beginnings in the small town of Lawrence, Whole Art has moved to the Old Whistle Stop building in Kalamazoo, the corner of Locust and Vine, the Park Trades Center, and, in 1996, to the present where we perform in two spaces, the Epic Theatre and the Whole Art Studio at either end of the Kalamazoo Mall. Over the years the theatre has grown and changed in many ways, but always with the intent of offering unique theatrical experiences to both its audiences and its actors.

“Kudos to the Whole Art for choosing material that raises issues we all need to address. Audiences just might walk away from this production with seeds for the kind of transformational conversations LaBute’s characters never quite achieve.”
"Fat Pig" review by Marin Heinritz, Kalamazoo Gazette

"Our community is remarkably fortunate that this uplifting work about grief and the healing process ["The Women of Lockerbie"] is currently in production. But this is more than blind luck. It is the result of Whole Art’s ongoing commitment to stage theatre that speaks to the values of daily life."
Gordon Bolar, Kalamazoo Gazette
