On this day in 1961 Russian-born ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev defected at Le Bourget Airport in Paris, slipping away from embassy guards and dashing through a security barrier, exclaiming to nearby gendarmes: I want to be free. Rudi’s nocturnal activities in the bohemian underworlds of Moscow and St. Petersburg had come to the attention of the KGB, so when the Kirov Ballet’s principal male dancer Konstantin Sergeyev injured himself, Nureyev used his own ballet training to leap at the chance to replace him on an international tour. As the first major cultural figure to choose exile over life in the Soviet Union, Nureyev’s defection was big news around the world in those dark days at the height of the Cold War, exactly the kind of notoriety the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas was looking for; within a week he became the principal dancer of that company, performing The Sleeping Beauty with Nina Vyroubova.

Willis Lamb, a major contributor to atomic physics and laser theory and recipient, (split with Polykarp Kusch), of the 1955 Nobel Prize in Physics for measurements of hydrogen fine structure (including his eponymous shift) died today from complications of a gallbladder disorder. He was ninety-four years old. Lamb’s career arc is quite interesting. He performed his PhD work under the direction of Robert Oppenheimer performing neutron scattering experiments to probe the electrical properties of the atomic nucleus.

Oscar-winning actress Lisa Blount dies at 53 Arkansas native and actor-producer Lisa Blount, 53, passed away in her Heights home on Wednesday as reported by her mother. Pulaski County Coroner Garland Camper said that Blount likely died on Monday and that there were no signs of foul play in Blount s North Woodrow Street home. Blount won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film as producer for 2001 s The Accountant, along with McKinnon, who directed and starred in the film. Her debut movie role was as a friend of Debra Winger s character in 1982 s An Officer and A Gentleman.

Jobs Exceed Expectations Most of the news this week was not good for mortgage rates. The economic data was generally a little stronger than expected, and investor concerns about Europe decreased. As a result, after reaching new lows early in the week, mortgage rates ended the week higher. Against a consensus forecast of 60K, the economy added 103K jobs in September, and the data for July and August was revised higher by 99K.
